Energy Healing

The word “Reiki” means “mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign.” It comes from the Japanese words “rei,” meaning universal, and “ki,” meaning life energy.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of hands-on energy healing. Our energy can stagnate in the body where there has been physical injury or even emotional pain. In time, these energy blocks can cause illness. Reiki's aim is to unblock this stagnant energy and bring healing.

Dr Mikao Usui

Reiki origins date back thousands of years to the time before Christ and Buddha in India and the East, we don't have original documents due to the traditional method of passing the knowledge from generation to generation by word of mouth. However, was rediscovered at the end of the nineteenth century by a Japanese Scholar and monk, Dr Mikao Usui. Dr Usui is the founder of the Reiki Usui method and the first Grand Master, who gave the name Reiki.

Mikao Usui studied allopathic medicine in Tokyo. During the cholera epidemic he joined a Zen monastery where he started to read the ancient Sanskrit and Sutras and his studies revealed methods of this art of hands-on healing. Usui left the monastery and set off for the holy mountain of Karuma, sitting in meditation for twenty-one days seeking the key to unlock the secrets of this ancient form of healing. On his last day, Usui was hit by a bright light from the sky that hit his forehead and was knocked unconscious. He had a vision of the sacred symbols and he had the confirmation that he finally found the keys to this form of healing used by Buddha and Jesus. The rest of Usui’s life was spenthealing, teaching and developing the Usui Shiki Rhoyo method of healing.

Dr Hayashi

Upon the death of Dr Usui in 1930, Dr Hayashi took over the role of the Second Grand Master. He set up a clinic in Tokyo where he was teaching his student the method and wrote many reports on the systems he had developed to treat various ailments.

Madam Takata, born in Hawaii, is the Third Grand Master, the first woman and the first foreigner to be given this honour. Dr Hayashi trained her and passed his knowledge to Madam Takata, she set up her clinic in Hawaii where she spent her time healing and teaching Reiki. Dr Hayashi invited Madam Takata in 1938 to become a Reiki Master.

Unfortunately, like many special things in this world, the human ego has taken hold. There are now several different associations throughout the world all fighting amongst each other. Each claim to have the only correct way of teaching Reiki. There is only one Reiki. No one has the right to claim it as their own, it belongs to humanity
and the universe.
